7 - THE ORACLE

VIOLETTA TRAVELED with Jasper to the palace in Casmerelda. They rode together on horseback, her arms wrapped around his waist.

“Do you think this is a wise idea?” he asked, glancing slightly back at her.

“Me riding with you?”

Jasper laughed. “No. Breaking into the guarded palace to attack the queen with the dagger Wynter handed you. It’s crazy. Isn’t it?”

“We’re not attacking the queen,” Violetta said and squeezed him a bit tighter. She let her breath linger against his ear as she kept her body close to his. “We’re going to collect a sample of her blood. Since she’s not likely going to subject herself to it willingly, then I guess we’re sort of attacking the queen. But,” Violetta said, trying to make it as clear as possible, “no harm shall come to her.”

“Those were Wynter’s words,” Jasper said. “At least the last bit. How do you suggest we get inside the palace?”

The sun shone down directly overhead. It was high noon.

“Oh, I don’t. My hope is the queen is outside.”

“How is that going to help us?” Jasper asked. “It’s not like we can hide her for five minutes and get what we need without her screaming. She’ll have guards on us before we can escape.” Clearly, he’d thought about their predicament as they rode through the forest.

“We may not need to. The last time she ordered her men to bring us to her and then dismissed them so she could question us. It’s possible something similar will happen.” Violetta wanted to help her two best friends, but she didn’t know how. Getting locked up by the Queen of Casmerelda was a situation she didn’t want to find herself in. She attempted to be as optimistic as possible.

“You have the dagger, right?” Jasper asked.

“Yes, secured where the scroll usually goes.” She kept it hidden tight against her body, careful not to lose it. Wynter made it known how important the dagger was to getting Leila back. They rode through the forest and toward the palace. Violetta could see the queen throwing snowballs at a girl who looked to be the same age. Could it be another member of the royal court from a neighboring country?

“How are we going to get Mara alone?” Violetta asked Jasper as they slowed their approach.

“I’m open to suggestions,” Jasper said. “Don’t take this the wrong way, Vi, but I’m not interested in seeing the inside of a prison cell today.”

“Will you ever be interested in being locked up?” Vi grinned. “When you are, let me know. Sounds like it could be a wild night.”

“You are incorrigible.” Jasper steered the horse across the drawbridge as they approached the castle.

Mara hid on one side, using it as protection while she formed two more snowballs and then threw them at the dark-haired girl.

“Aurora!” Mara’s voice echoed against the stone.

The dark-haired girl, presumably Aurora, rounded the castle from behind Mara. “Over here!” she said and Mara spun around only to find a snowball slammed into her face. She scrunched her nose and wiped the wetness away.
